Product Details:

Treaty of Paris by Benjamin West is an unfinished painting that was meant to commemorate the signing of the Treaty of Paris in 1783, which officially ended the American Revolutionary War. This treaty marked the formal recognition of the United States as an independent nation by Great Britain. The painting prominently features the American delegation, which included John Jay, the U.S. diplomat who played a key role in the negotiations. John Adams, the future second President of the United States and a staunch advocate for American independence. Benjamin Franklin, one of the most influential figures in securing the alliance with France and in the negotiations with Britain. Henry Laurens, former President of the Continental Congress and a member of the American delegation. William Temple Franklin, Benjamin Franklin’s grandson and secretary. The British delegation is notably absent from the painting. Benjamin West intended to include them, but the British representatives declined to pose, possibly due to lingering tensions and feelings of humiliation following their defeat. As a result, the painting remains incomplete, with a blank space where the British figures were meant to appear.
