The Retreat through the Jerseys by Howard Pyle is a historically evocative painting depicting one of the darker moments in the American Revolutionary War. It portrays George Washington's Continental Army retreating across New Jersey in the late fall and winter of 1776, following defeats by the British forces in New York. In Pyle's signature style, the scene captures the grim reality and hardship of the retreat. The soldiers are depicted in ragged clothing, enduring the harsh weather, with expressions that convey fatigue, cold, and uncertainty. The landscape around them is barren and desolate, enhancing the sense of despair but also the determination to continue the fight.
