"The Recall of Columbus" by Augustus Goodyear Heaton captures a pivotal moment in the life of Christopher Columbus. The painting depicts the moment when Columbus, heading towards France after being dismissed by the Spanish court, is intercepted by a royal messenger on a bridge near Granada. The messenger delivers a letter from Queen Isabella recalling Columbus to Spain, where he would eventually secure the support for his voyages. The painting was exhibited at the Columbian Historical Exposition in Madrid in 1892 and at the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago in 1893, aligning with celebrations for the 400th anniversary of Columbus's landing in the New World.
