Product Details:

The Grand Union Flag, a pivotal symbol of American history, is commemorated in the Historic Flag Series on the 6-cent 1968 issue U.S. stamp. The American warship Alfred becomes the first Continental Navy vessel to fly the Grand Union Flag. The new banner, which is the forerunner to the Stars and Stripes, is run up the mast by an officer aboard by the name of John Paul Jones. This stamp pays homage to the flag used by American forces during the early stages of the Revolutionary War, combining the Union Jack and thirteen alternating red and white stripes representing the thirteen colonies. The design reflects the complex colonial sentiments at the outset of the conflict, where the desire for autonomy coexisted with a lingering connection to British heritage.
