The Escape of Arnold on the British Sloop-of-War, Vulture by Howard Pyle illustrates the dramatic escape of Benedict Arnold after his treason was exposed in 1780. Benedict Arnold, once a respected American general, had secretly plotted with the British to surrender West Point in exchange for money and a high-ranking position in the British Army. His co-conspirator, British Major John Andre, was captured with incriminating documents, revealing Arnold's betrayal. On September 25, 1780, upon learning that his treachery was discovered, Arnold fled on horseback to the Hudson River, where he boarded the British warship HMS Vulture, narrowly escaping capture. He later joined the British Army, becoming one of America's most infamous traitors.
