Product Details:
The Burial of Braddock by Howard Pyle depicts the solemn and dramatic moment following the Battle of the Monongahela (1755) during the French and Indian War. General Edward Braddock, the British commander, led an expedition to capture Fort Duquesne (modern-day Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania) but was ambushed and decisively defeated by French and Native American forces. Mortally wounded during the retreat, Braddock died on July 13, 1755, and was buried in an unmarked grave to prevent his body from being desecrated by enemy forces. A young George Washington, then Braddock’s aide-de-camp, took charge of organizing the retreat and later presided over the burial. Braddock’s men buried him in the middle of the road, and wagons were driven over the grave to hide its location.
