Product Details:

Sullivan's Island Bombarded by the British, 1776 by Frederick Coffay Yohn depicts the Battle of Sullivan's Island, fought on June 28, 1776, during the American Revolutionary War. This battle was a major victory for the Patriot forces in South Carolina, where the incomplete Fort Sullivan (later renamed Fort Moultrie) withstood a powerful bombardment and attack from the British Royal Navy and troops under General Henry Clinton. The British fleet, commanded by Commodore Sir Peter Parker, unleashed a heavy bombardment on the unfinished palmetto-log fort held by Colonel William Moultrie's South Carolina militia. The fort’s spongy palmetto logs and sandy foundation absorbed the cannon fire, preventing serious damage. American artillery returned fire, inflicting heavy damage on British warships, including HMS Acteon, Bristol, and Experiment. The battle ended in a decisive American victory, saving Charleston from British occupation in 1776.
