"Sgt. William Jasper Replacing the Flag" by Frederick Coffay Yohn captures the heroic moment during the Battle of Sullivan's Island in June 1776, a key event in the American Revolutionary War. The painting depicts Sergeant William Jasper, a soldier in the South Carolina militia, risking his life to retrieve and raise the fallen flag of Fort Moultrie (then Fort Sullivan) after it was struck down by British cannon fire. Despite heavy enemy bombardment, Jasper courageously secured the flag on the fort's parapet, inspiring his fellow soldiers and bolstering morale during the critical battle. His actions became a symbol of bravery and patriotism.
