Jefferson was a champion of democracy, individual rights, and limited government, he played a key role in shaping early American ideals. As president, he oversaw the Louisiana Purchase (1803), doubling the nation’s size, and commissioned the Lewis and Clark Expedition to explore the West. Jefferson was also a scholar, architect, and founder of the University of Virginia.
