Joseph Wright’s Portrait of George Washington is notable as one of the earliest life portraits of the first U.S. president. Created in 1784, Wright's painting captures Washington from life, giving it historical significance and authenticity. Joseph Wright was one of the few artists who had the chance to paint Washington from direct observation, and he completed this work during Washington's retirement at Mount Vernon after the Revolutionary War.
