"Landing of Columbus" by John Vanderlyn is a significant historical painting completed in 1846. Commissioned by the U.S. Congress, it is one of the large-scale works displayed in the Rotunda of the United States Capitol, depicting a pivotal moment in the European exploration of the Americas. The painting portrays Christopher Columbus landing on the shores of the New World on October 12, 1492, on what is believed to be the island of San Salvador in the Bahamas. Columbus is shown claiming the land for Spain by planting a flag and holding a sword, symbolizing authority and conquest. The painting celebrates Columbus as a pioneer and symbol of European exploration and discovery, reflecting the 19th-century admiration for such figures.
