The portrait of James Monroe by Samuel F. B. Morse, the famous inventor of the telegraph, captures the fifth President of the United States in a dignified and solemn pose. Serving from 1817 to 1825, Monroe is best known for the "Monroe Doctrine," a key foreign policy statement that warned European nations against further colonization or intervention in the Americas, which became a cornerstone of U.S. policy in the Western Hemisphere. Born in Virginia, Monroe was a member of the Continental Congress and a veteran of the Revolutionary War. He served as a diplomat in France, where he helped negotiate the Louisiana Purchase. Before his presidency, Monroe held several important roles, including Governor of Virginia, U.S. Senator, Secretary of State, and Secretary of War. His administration oversaw the Missouri Compromise, which attempted to balance the interests of free and slave states.
