Product Details:
Alonzo Chappel’s portrait of James Monroe is a historical depiction of the fifth President of the United States, best known for the Monroe Doctrine and his role in the founding era of the nation. Monroe was a soldier in the American Revolution, a diplomat, and a statesman who helped shape early American policy. Monroe served in the Continental Army and was wounded at the Battle of Trenton in 1776. After the war, he studied law under Thomas Jefferson, which influenced his political philosophy. He became a U.S. Senator and later served as the Governor of Virginia. As a diplomat, Monroe helped negotiate the Louisiana Purchase (1803) alongside Robert Livingston, securing a vast territory from France and doubling the size of the United States. Perhaps his most enduring legacy, the Monroe Doctrine declared that the Western Hemisphere was off-limits to European colonization or interference.
