Product Details:

George Washington and Christopher Gist on the Allegheny by Daniel Huntington depicts a historical moment where George Washington, accompanied by Christopher Gist, is crossing the Allegheny River during a surveying expedition in the Ohio Country. This event took place during Washington’s mission to deliver a message from the British Governor Dinwiddie of Virginia to the French forces in the Ohio Country, ordering them to leave British-claimed territory. On the return trip, Washington and Gist attempted to cross the frozen Allegheny River but fell into the icy waters when their raft capsized. Washington nearly drowned but managed to reach an island in the river, where they spent a freezing night before continuing their journey. This mission was a key prelude to the French and Indian War (1754-1763), as it marked the beginning of tensions between Britain and France over North American territory.
