Product Details:
“We fight, get beat, rise, and fight again” is one of General Nathanael Greene's most famous quotes, and it perfectly encapsulates his strategy and mindset during the Southern Campaign of the American Revolutionary War (1780–1781). After the disastrous American defeat at Camden, South Carolina in 1780, General George Washington appointed Nathanael Greene as the new commander of the Southern Department of the Continental Army. The Southern theater was in disarray—morale was low, supply lines were stretched thin, and British forces under General Cornwallis had control over large swaths of territory. Greene recognized that he could not defeat the British in a head-on traditional European-style battle. Instead, he employed a strategy of attrition, using guerrilla tactics, mobility, and strategic retreats to exhaust British resources and willpower. Greene’s words reflect the resilience and perseverance of the American forces. Though they often suffered defeats, they refused to quit. They would regroup, adapt, and keep pressing forward—a spirit that defined much of the American Revolution.
