The Battle of Chantilly, fought on September 1, 1862, occurred as part of the Northern Virginia Campaign. The artwork depicts Major General Philip Kearny, a distinguished and bold Union officer, leading a charge during the fierce and chaotic Battle of Chantilly. Despite adverse weather conditions—including heavy rain and lightning—and a daunting Confederate defense, Kearny is shown valiantly riding at the head of his troops.
