Product Details:
"We shall cut no small figure through the country with our cannon." This quote captures the determination and audacity behind the extraordinary feat of transporting 60 tons of artillery across hundreds of miles of snowy terrain during the American Revolutionary War — a mission that significantly contributed to the British evacuation of Boston. Henry Knox, a 25-year-old bookseller from Boston turned artillery expert proposed an ambitious plan to retrieve cannons and other armaments captured by American forces at Fort Ticonderoga and Fort Crown Point in upstate New York. He and his team hauled 59 cannons, mortars, and other artillery pieces — weighing over 120,000 pounds — across rough terrain, frozen rivers, and snow-covered mountains, using oxen, sleds, and sheer determination.
His quote, “We shall cut no small figure through the country with our cannon,” was a blend of excitement and humor — a recognition of how impressive (and conspicuous) the convoy must have looked as it rumbled through small towns with massive weaponry. By March 1776, the cannons were positioned on Dorchester Heights, overlooking Boston. Their sudden appearance forced the British to evacuate the city — marking one of the first major American strategic victories of the war.
