Product Details:

Father Corby's Gettysburg Absolution by Paul Henry Woodbury depicts of an iconic moment during the Battle of Gettysburg in the American Civil War. The artwork captures Father William Corby, a Catholic priest and chaplain of the Irish Brigade, giving general absolution to Union troops on July 2, 1863, just before they entered combat. Father Corby’s blessing was meant to provide spiritual strength and comfort to the soldiers facing the imminent, fierce fighting. This moment became legendary, symbolizing both the faith and the emotional weight carried by soldiers and their chaplains during the Civil War. The scene is notable for highlighting Father Corby’s courageous presence on the battlefield, where he stood exposed to the same dangers as the soldiers he blessed.
