Product Details:
Decatur Boarding Tripolitan Gunboat by Alonzo Chappel depicts Stephen Decatur's daring naval action during the First Barbary War (1801–1805), a conflict between the United States and the North African Barbary states over piracy and tribute demands. The event took place during the U.S. naval campaign against the Tripolitan pirates, who were seizing American merchant ships and demanding ransoms. Stephen Decatur, a young and bold U.S. Navy officer, led a hand-to-hand boarding attack against a Tripolitan gunboat in Tripoli Harbor on August 3, 1804. Decatur personally engaged and killed the Tripolitan captain in intense close-quarters combat. This battle was part of the broader campaign to suppress Barbary piracy and assert American naval power.
