Product Details

Death of General Richard Montgomery on 31st December 1775 by Alonzo Chappel captures a dramatic and pivotal moment from the early stages of the American Revolutionary War. Known for his highly detailed and emotionally evocative historical works, Chappel's depiction of Montgomery's death reflects both the tragedy of the event and the heroism of those involved in the failed assault on Quebec City. The attack on Quebec City was part of the ill-fated American invasion of Canada, an early strategy to rally support among Canadian colonists and prevent British troops from using the region as a base. General Richard Montgomery, a seasoned officer and key figure in the Continental Army, led the campaign alongside Colonel Benedict Arnold. On December 31, 1775, Montgomery spearheaded the attack during a snowstorm, but the assault ended in disaster when British defenders repelled the American forces. Montgomery was struck by grapeshot and killed instantly during the initial stages of the assault. His death marked a significant loss for the Continental Army, as he was one of its most capable and respected leaders. General Montgomery’s death made him one of the first martyrs of the American Revolution. His courage and leadership inspired many, even in defeat.
