Product Details:
Death of Colonel Scammell at the Siege of Yorktown by Alonzo Chappel depicts the tragic wounding and subsequent death of Colonel Alexander Scammell, a distinguished officer in the Continental Army during the Siege of Yorktown (1781)—the final major battle of the American Revolution. Colonel Alexander Scammell was serving as the Adjutant General of George Washington’s army before taking command of a light infantry unit. On September 30, 1781, while scouting enemy positions outside Yorktown, Scammell was ambushed by a group of Hessian cavalry. He was shot, captured, and taken to British lines, where he was later paroled to an American field hospital. Despite medical care, he died on October 6, 1781, becoming one of the most notable American officers to fall at Yorktown.
