Braddock's Retreat on 9th July 1755 by Alonzo Chappel is a historical painting that captures a dramatic moment during the French and Indian War. The artwork depicts the chaotic and desperate retreat of British General Edward Braddock's forces following their devastating defeat at the Battle of the Monongahela on July 9, 1755. The Battle of the Monongahela was a significant defeat for the British during the French and Indian War. General Braddock's overconfidence and disregard for the effectiveness of Native American warfare tactics contributed to the ambush and rout of his forces. This battle marked an early engagement in George Washington's military career, where he gained experience and demonstrated leadership during the retreat.
