Braddock's Defeat, Battle of Monongahela by Howard Pyle illustrates the Battle of the Monongahela (July 9, 1755) during the French and Indian War, where British General **Edward Braddock's expedition was ambushed and overwhelmed by a combined force of French soldiers, Canadian militia, and Native American warriors near present-day Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania He led British and colonial troops (including a young George Washington as an aide) in an attempt to seize Fort Duquesne. The British, marching in tight European formations, were caught off guard by a guerrilla-style ambush, leading to devastating losses. He was mortally wounded and later buried secretly to protect his remains. Displaying bravery, Washington helped rally the troops and organize an orderly retreat, preventing complete annihilation.
