The British, marching in tight European formations, were caught off guard by a guerrilla-style ambush, leading to devastating losses. He was mortally wounded and later buried secretly to protect his remains. Displaying bravery, Washington helped rally the troops and organize an orderly retreat, preventing complete annihilation.
