The Battle of Long Island (also known as the Battle of Brooklyn) by Alanzo Chappel depicts the first major battle after the United States declared independence. In this chaotic and dramatic scene, American soldiers, including militiamen, are shown retreating from British forces across an open field, emphasizing the intense combat and desperation of the American troops. The use of smoke and distant red-coated British soldiers highlights the confusion and brutality of battle. The small wooden structure in the foreground stands as a contrast to the large scale of the conflict unfolding around it. The battle was a major loss for the fledgling Continental Army and ended with General George Washington barley escaping with his army and his life.
