Product Details:

Battle of Lake Erie by William Henry Powell depicts a significant naval engagement from the War of 1812. Powell captures the moment when Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry transfers from his damaged flagship, USS Lawrence, to the USS Niagara to continue leading the battle. Perry is often depicted raising the famous flag with the motto "Don't Give Up the Ship," which was the dying command of Captain James Lawrence from an earlier battle. This battle was pivotal because it gave the United States control of Lake Erie, thereby securing the Great Lakes region and enabling American forces to recapture Detroit and threaten British positions in Upper Canada.
