The Battle of Bull Run by Kurz and Allison captures the chaos and intensity of the First Battle of Bull Run (First Manassas), fought on July 21, 1861. The artwork, created in the late 19th century, is part of a series produced by Kurz and Allison to commemorate key events of the American Civil War. In this dynamic depiction, the battlefield is alive with action, showing Union and Confederate forces clashing in fierce combat. The scene is marked by smoke, explosions, and soldiers engaged in close-quarters fighting. Union artillery and infantry are prominently displayed in the foreground, emphasizing the scale and ferocity of the battle. The chaotic retreat of Union forces is also vividly portrayed, reflecting the disarray and panic that characterized the end of the battle.
