Product Details:

Baptism of Pocahontas by John Gadsby Chapman is a historically significant painting that portrays a symbolic moment in early American history. Completed in 1840, it was commissioned by the U.S. Congress and installed in the Rotunda of the United States Capitol. The painting depicts the baptism of Pocahontas, the daughter of Powhatan, the powerful chief of the Powhatan Confederacy, in 1614 at Jamestown, Virginia. The painting captures Pocahontas’ conversion to Christianity and baptism, an event that marked a turning point in relations between Native Americans and English settlers. Pocahontas, renamed Rebecca, stands at the center of the scene, symbolizing her acceptance of Christianity and European culture. Her baptism preceded her marriage to English colonist John Rolfe, which played a significant role in fostering peace between the Powhatan people and the settlers during the early years of the Jamestown colony.
