Product Details:
"Attack on Roanoke Island" by Alonzo Chappel depicts the Battle of Roanoke Island, which took place during the American Civil War on February 7–8, 1862. The battle was part of the Union Army’s Burnside Expedition to gain control of coastal North Carolina. Chappel illustrates the amphibious assault led by Union General Ambrose Burnside, as his troops landed on Roanoke Island and engaged the Confederate defenders under Brigadier General Henry A. Wise. The Union’s decisive victory at Roanoke Island gave them control of the strategic Albemarle Sound, effectively cutting off Confederate supply lines and providing a crucial foothold in North Carolina. This battle demonstrated the effectiveness of Union joint army-navy operations, as gunboats supported the land assault, overwhelming the outnumbered Confederate defenders.
